The lappy I am using as a lith ion and its shot,if the mains lead is disconnected for about five minutes it dies. The daughter was told this happened because she always left it on the mains.

I do agree with this, of course but, as I intimated earlier, should there be a power cut (or a tripped circuit breaker) whilst working on an important file, much important work could be lost. For this reason, I leave the battery in (as an UPS) giving plenty of time to save work and properly shut down. I accept the slow deterioration of battery charge-retention as an acceptable compromise. Even if it holds its charge for five minutes (which is a bit pessimistic) that's enough for my purposes.

At the same time batteries can be replaced and it seems rather easily on modern laptops. The expense may be one consideration but it's not exactly a component that would need regular attention even with daily use.

I believe that I was told that a new battery would be in excess of £70.

What a good idea! That would keep a laptop going for quite some time. A little heavy for use 'on the move', though.

Not exactly what I meant.........but worth thinking about. I'm sure somebody could come up with an ergonomic back pack to put it in and if you had a 12v kettle you could always mash a brew to enjoy with your browsing ect.........think of the money you could save on cafe prices.
