Default The replacement Windows

BBC NEWS | Technology | Microsoft sees end of Windows era

I think I'll be following this with interest - anything tha MS come out with will be adopted by the masses at some point whether it is wanted or not so what they do will be exciting to see.

Very interesting Adam. I must admit I can't understand a lot of what the article is trying to say but I will have a word with my son in law and see if he has heard anything on his various grape vines. If Windows does get superceded then whichever operating system relaces it will have to have some compatibility with Windows or we will be running a dual system which will make things very difficult.

I thought this post was about double glazing before I clicked on it!

I can see why M$ wants to go this route. They have failed to corner the market on the internet as the likes of Google have beaten them there. I think this is their latest attempt at getting more share of that.

To be honest I wonder where the PC market will go next. Why do we need Hex core gigabyte cpus when most of the processing power is spent supporting the user interface. I suspect with higher energy prices we may well see a period where power consumption become the main selection criteria when people chose a PC to buy. In which case I think a much more restricted operating system than Windows will be required. Of course this will banjax the play on demand video business model but by then we will have digital TV.

This wouldn't be the first time MS have set off in completely the wrong direction, anybody remember OS2?

OS2? Wasn't that IBM?

I remember installing OS2 Warp on my PC - never was I so glad to see the little 3.11 logo after putting Windows back on!

OS/2 was originally developed by MS in a joint venture with IBM. However once the 'solid hit the air con' MS walked away leaving IBM to carry the can and to develop fixes for all the bugs
