Default Bargain food

Being unemployed puts so many constraints on life not least food. I daresay my diet isn't as healthy as it should be but I seem to be in ok health.

Amyway today I was in Morrison's supermarket and did a double take when I saw 4 fresh quarter pound beef burgers for 50p. Naturally I was hooked and bought them. I cooked 2 of them for my lunch and ate them with fresh bread and low fat spread on the side. They were lovely... I froze the other two for another day.

Anyone else happened upon a similar bargain recently?

You are not on your own Bunny in finding the cheapo shelf good value at Morrisons. Mrs Esca goes and looks on it every time we go shopping. Those Morrisons Beef Burgers are really great, none of the scrapings off the Butchery floor just good honest minced beef. We had a couple the other day with some Anya potatoes, £1.99 for 2 kilos (4.4 lbs) with a BOGOF at Sainsbury. They do a cheapo shelf as well which is worth looking at even if you don't buy anything else there.

Hi Esca I also noticed at Morrison's yesterday that they have a list of stuff for 50p including 2 little gem lettuces and a pack of 8 sausages. Cheap sausages aren't always wonderful but jazzed up with onion gravy and served with veggies and mash they make a perfectly acceptable meal.

Some of the sausages at Morrisons, and other Super Markets, only have a low percentage of actual meat in them. Morrisons have some sausages which only have 60% meat, the rest is rusk and additives. I'm sensitive about sausages and I always check the meat content. If there is less than about 70% meat I won't buy them. If you like a really meaty sausage then try Lidl and get some of their German Bratwurst. They have small ones and others which are quite large. These sausages contain about 90% pork so they are very meaty. They are fantastic with onion gravy. Have a look at their web site and see what offers they have. www.lidl.co.uk the Dulano Range of foods show what sort of meats and sausages etc they have.

I have just been to Morrison's their 50p list includes aforementioned sausages and little gem lettuce and also 1kilo small new potatoes 4 tomatoes in a tray bread rolls and a pack of diced chicken fillet also their 400g granary cob loaves (my fave) are currently 2 for a quid. Shame I can't take advantage of the bread offer but crusty bread doesn't freeze too well and it would go stale before I could use it.

Am now having a late lunch of a granary sandwich with little gem leaves sliced tomato cheese and mayo with a couple of twists of black pepper... yum yum

we won't go into the meaty sausage question lol

So for my dinner today I had my version of Spanish omelette...cold potatoes diced and fried with chopped peppers (had them in the fridge already) half a tomato diced, some frozen mixed veg, two beaten eggs and some of that lovely granary bread on the side spread with BOGOF I can't believe it's not butter. Meal in moments and dead cheap too. And the upside is not a lot of washing up.

My daughter was in a Morrisons store yesterday and she told me they were selling a pack of 4 kiwi fruits for 50p!! I know it is so the store can off load the stock but good on Morrisons! I shall have to have look around that store, the trouble is it is not close to my home so what I would save in grocery I would use in petrol. I may as well stay local.

what with this credit crunch, i think that most supermarkets are trying to undercut each-other offering bogof/half-price or less/or yellow label goods i.e. Tescos-i generally use Tescos as they are local and have reduced my weekly shop by quite a bit without really trying

also i read an article recently that supermarkets generally grade their goods in 4 levels-premiium own-brand/manufacturer brand/standard own-brand and budget own-brand-it was also found that the only real difference was in the packaging and the quality of the food was basically the same!-we have been conditioned to buying the allegedly top-brand stuff at a higher price just due to the better quality pictures on the packaging

well not anymore

most of the own brand stuff is made by the brand counter part. There are somethings I only buy brand stuff of as I think it is a much better quality. Kellogs cereals for one.

This Credit crunch is affecting everyone! I work for Morrisons and to be honest I find them expensive even though I have Discount aswell, but seriously though..... I do my shopping mostly at either Tesco or Mainly Asda. Ive been Shopping At asda lately as I find it SOOOO much Cheaper and the Cheapest out of Super Markets.
