Selkie - An abattoir which is correctly run doesn't have screaming and struggling animals with broken tails or anything else. This link shows a correctly run abattoir and, if you dare to watch, you won't see any badly treated animals. The process is quick and humane and, just out of interest, animals which are stressed before being killed don't make good eating. Noel Chadwick Ltd :: Abattoir - Slaughtering Lamb

no thanks I can't look!!! the people who work there are on piece work and so they push through the animals and don't care about anything apart from getting them killed, of course they will do it correctly when being filmed, look around the net and take a look at the secret films on abattoirs, not something I can find for you as it desturbs me too deeply

Yes I'm an omnivore too. I like meat and would also be prepared to kill for it if necessary.

It's just a matter of personal taste, I'm a very fussy eater! It's nothing to do with ethics or whatever, although I would prefer to think that animals killed for meat were killed humanely and kept in good conditions during their life. I gave up meat aged 11 because I don't like it. Simple as.

This thread has thrown up some interesting questions. I would agree that if I was in the wilderness and faced with kill my own food or die I would most likely grit my teeth and get on with it, how fortunate I am that I do not have to make that choice.

I wasn't having a dig Amy but I regard Veggism a bit like being teetotal you either are or you are not.

What I find stange is the large number of Veggies who do not hesitate to eat fish. I don't understand it. Is it because fish are cold blooded in which case so are snakes frogs and lizards would they eat those? Or perhaps it's because they are aquatic. In which case so are dolphins and seals (watch out Selkie) would they eat those? Maybe it's because fish are somehow seen a unintelligent have you ever met an elk up close? I got stalked by one once God they are dumb.

I don't like beetroot perhaps there is an -arianism especially for that.

Yes.

Grew up on a farm. Seen them alive, seen them dead - best meat I've had. They had a good life so I have no issue with it. OK I didn't kill them myself but would be able to if needed.

To be perfectly honest, I am not comfortable with the label Vegetarian as I know that a true veggie would not agree that I was one, as I do eat fish. I just find it a more convenient way to describe my diet than going into great lengths about what I do and do not eat. However, this too has its downsides as people often assume incorrectly that I am part of an animal rights movement, and as I stated previously, while I am against cruelty this is not the reason I don't eat meat and I don't view myself as a campaigner or anything. Oooh it's an awkward one!

Since so many of you would kill your own meat, I'll hope that if I ever am stranded somewhere and need to eat it to survive, that one or other of you are there with me!

of course i would, if it came down to a matter of life and death-but then again that is another discussion-since Man first walked on this planet, it has been in our genes to kill to eat purely as a matter of survival-it is not a question of whether we can do it, it is a question of would we do it-our genetic make-up suggests that we would and could do it, whether we are vegetarian or not

And when man first picked up a rock or a stick and used it to kill for meat, he was not only becoming an aggressor but he was also protecting himself from being eaten by those animals.

I have kept sheep and the hardest part of the season was to load the lambs up into a trailer and know that they were going to the abbatoir. One year I had a lovely bottle-fed lamb which I kept back to have it slaughtered by a local butcher while I watched...I felt I owed it to my flock to go through the entire life-death cycle. it was a sobering moment and I certainly came to understand the solemnity and the importance of dignity of death....a kind of quiet mystery and respect for the dead. I am gllad I did it...I felt more human, more caring of my flock and more respectful of the animals we bring into the world and then usher out, at our bidding.
