Just curious...
If you had to kill your own food would you still eat meat?
Just curious. As an almost veggie (I just eat some fish) I certainly wouldn't, and I would probably not eat fish either if I had to kill it and prepare it first.

Never having killed a cow, pig, chicken etc I couldn't honestly say if I could kill an anilmal to eat if their was an alternative such as plenty of fruit & veg.
My hunch is I'd eat less meat, likely none.

Amy - The Homo Sapiens species, namely us, is an Omnivorous animal. Our bodies are designed to eat plants and animals in equal measure. In fact some say that the Ominvor will eat anything with four legs except the table. Not true because we will, in certain circumstances, also eat things with two legs. However, if you choose to eat meat you also have to be prepared to kill and prepare it. In this day and age hunting, shooting and preparing ones food can easily be avoided by getting someone else to do the job. In short, we tend to ignore the meat preparation because most people find this to be unpleasant - we opt out of the job. The human body needs a balanced diet and if this can be obtained by only eating non-meat food then a person has a choice. It is easier, and more acceptable, to grow and eat vegetable matter than it is to kill and eat animals. If you were to find yourself in a "survival" situation where the Supermarket wasn't there and you had to find your own food then whether you ate leaves, shoots and roots etc or killed some animal or other would become a critical decision. Survival techniques taught to the forces include killing and eating animals and finding suitable vegetables and such to supplement the meat diet. I have both killed and eaten rabbits but have never tackled anything any bigger. Cows, sheep and pigs would be a different kettle of fish I would imagine. I know that the SAS do kill sheep in the area round the Brecon Beacons as part of their survival training along with smaller mammals. I personally don't have any problems with meat or fish and I can, and would, kill and eat animals for food if I had to. Unlike carnivors, like lions and wolves, we can't survive solely on meat and stay healthy and I suspect that total vegetarian living needs some sorting out as well.

We also have canine teeth for tearing meat besides molars which will crack nuts. Personally, I would prefer, and find it safer, to crack nuts with a stone rather than with my teeth. I don't have any problems with people being vegetarians if that is the way they want to go. If you get a balanced diet complete with the amino acids and vitamins etc needed to have healthy life then fine. What I am saying is that Homo Sapiens is an omnivorous animal and we are designed to eat both meat and vegetables. I don't really see where greed comes into all this. Having a nice pork chop with onion gravy and mashed spuds and some carrots isn't greed, not unless you make a point of eating 4 pounds of chops, 6 pounds of spuds and a couple of pounds of carrots. I suppose eating 6 pounds of walnuts with 2 dozen lettuces and half a dozen marrows could also be classed as greed.

you have just made me LOL loads..........yes our teeth suggest we need to have a bit of meat.........once or twice a year!!
and what I mean by greed is this human greed for burgers and sausages by the dozen not at any point do these people think well hang on this animal went kicking and screaming into the slaughter house after being kicked and punched and their tails snapped because they knew what was coming,
there is no need for that sort of greed...........if everyone cut down on there meat consumption then not so many animals would have to go through hell on earth and hell in death to end up on peoples plates

and I might add now i am on one, if the land needed to graze cattle was used for crops all around the world then we would be able to feed the third world and I might add people like eh hem let's say the big burger giants are the people who are cutting down the rain forests and taking from the poor farmer the small amount of self helping he had in the first place, this amounts to greed in my book, people insisting on having what they want no matter how it effect's the planet and the people in it!

Answering your original question Amy yes I would no problem. In fact I think anybody who is not prepared to kill animals but eat meat are probably deluding themselves. Strangely I have never understood so called vegetarians who eat fish, shellfish and eggs.
Sorry I'm an omnivore I'll eat anything and that means I'm prepared to kill it.
