negatives could cause a lot of distress if used in a wrong way by the wrong people

Doesn't this make the whole Reputation system pointless? 10 people might think the post is derogatory, inaccurate or just wrong but as long as 1 person gives them points then up the Rep table they go.

Rep points shouldn't be a popularity contest

they should not be used for spite either and they will be, I have seen a similar thing on another forum.....and it is not just about a post being informative ect, it might because it made you laugh ect

I still say if you can't be positive to someone then say nothing, I would be hurt to have a negative and to read something nasty, I would stop posting immediately, I don't come here to be attacked, I come here for a positive lift to my mood

As I said that makes them pointless and as such why do we need them?

if you don't get any then surely that is enough to know your posts are not enough to earn rep points, why would we want to be negative to each other? everyone will be getting a negative every time we disagree, we are supposed to be friendly not negative to each other and to top it off we won't know who is even being negative, it can be seriously abused and we can even receive abuse through this method

I know who gives reputation for whom. I can also remove it. The point of it is that you might think that a post hasn't helped in a situation so you leave negative rep for it. It isn't open for abuse.

You can't see who left you rep at the moment as you would be able to see who left negative rep and that would lead to people leaving negative rep back to that person.

Nonsense! How do you distinguish between people thinking it's a poor post and apathy?
