Does anyone think it would be useful to have a thread devoted to these? I.e. A thread in which we could ask others to help us with some of the clues in prize-winning competitions?

Hmm- dunno the stupid laws we have these days, but I'm always happy to help others with answers.

I think it should be ok, after all we can google the answers, we can e-mail friends for the answers, so why not use a forum? I'll let you know if I have anything for you to mull over.
