You buy a packet of seeds for £2.99. then you buy the compost to plant them in. You heat and water them for a number of weeks and hey presto you have maybe a dozen plants. Trouble is the local DIY store or garden center are selling the same plants for 99p for six!

So is it worth the time and effort to raise your own seeds?

We grow a few things and it's nice to pick them and we know there's no chemicals used on them.

I don't have much of a garden, but I've grown my own tomatoes and a few herbs every year for about 4 years now, I enjoy it and the end results are better than what I can buy in the supermarket.
I think I might try courgettes this year.

Its great fun to grow your own veg and flowers from seed, it's done more as a hobby than saving money

I think it is very satisfying to grow them yourself from seed.

we live in the highlands of scotland ad we grow all our own..We plant our seeds, take cuttings and replant..
I also have an Apple, Pear, Orange tree which me and the kids planted 3 yrs ago..the apple tree is 2 ft tall.We also grow our own veg, nowt tastes better than home grown and i think it applies to flowers, it makes a difference to watch them grow and see them flower each year, also if we were to buy them up here you are talking 10.99 for 6 established plants, so it is cheaper for us to seed our own.

yes, Apple Orange Pear and we have a plum that is seeded under the sink..Hopefully that will sprout aswell..Sucess is in the leaving it alone to do what it would do in the natural surroundings..Just repot it ever year or better still plant in a large pot so it can be left undisturbed for atleast 4-5 yrs..Most fruit bought in the shops can be planted, but if you want to establish eating apples best to plant 2 seeds from different apples as they need to cross polinate...
