Well I just signed up for Genes. What a totally unhelpful package. Everytime I tried to open the my tree page I got an error (something about illegal characters. I ignored that and started 'uploading' my tree. For uploading read typing in from scratch. It was so pedantic that after about an hour I'd only done about 21 of the 300 or so ancestors I have to do so I gave up. The good news is that it found some of my problem people on other trees so maybe I can get a few clues.

Sooty, you ought to be able to upload your tree as a Gedcom file. Look for a bit which details Import/Export your tree. I did have some problems when they switched to new format but everything's fine now.

All that said in 24 hours of the 30 odd names being posed I have had 4 messages with matches. It seems I am unexpectedly heading for Suzigirl country!

I joined them over a year ago, and get loads of e-mails with 'hot' matches-they always turn out to be names I had pumped in myself anyway.

I took my tree off after there were security issues sometime back.

But when I did use the site found too many people never replied, some people who contacted me to show them the tree had no connection whatsoever.

The Hot Matches were a joke.

I think theres only so much you get from the site and after several years it was not helping me at all.
