Yes Jamie - it is called delegation.

A good manager Motivates, Delegates and Communicates to his/her workforce. The Motivation usually involves questions like: "Do you want to consider further continuous employment or are you going to take your skills to the Job Centre?" Delegation comes when your Manager says something like: "I have a job which I think suites your expertise and personality." following which you get the Poisoned Chalice, and Communication comes in various guises from "What the hell do you think you are doing?" to " I am watching you so any more arsing around and you're in big trouble."

Oh and they send you on courses to learn all this stuff.
