Today seems to have been quite an important date in historical terms.

On This Day

1066: William, Duke of Normandy, defeats and kills Harold II of England at the Battle of Hastings.

1947: US pilot Chuck Yeager becomes the first man to break the sound barrier, in the aircraft Bell X1.

1962: US spy planes detect Soviet nuclear weapons sites on Cuba, sparking the Cuban Missile Crisis.
