Default Sixty Years Ago Today

It was on 6 February 1952 that Princess Elizabeth, on a trip to Kenya, became Queen. It must be a bitter sweet anniversary for the Queen, since it is the day her father died. There is quite an interesting article about the events.

Article here.

I am just old enough to remember that day. What I remember more though, is being taken to Windsor (we were living in Slough at the time) to see all the floral tributes outside of St George's Chapel. It was a very sombre time and place.

She was staying at Treetops, I believe, when she heard the news. Marge and I spent part of our honeymoon there. The elephants were very 'amusing' - you'll know exactly what I mean if you've been there!

Joking apart, the Queen is the one public figure who has maintained her dignity, her poise and her entitlement to public respect throughout the massive political, demographical and social changes this country has undergone in the last few decades.

She'll be sadly missed if and when that jug-eared buffoon Charles and his courtesan take her place. When Lizzy does eventually shuffle skywards, I hope the FA Cup does the decent thing and passes the monarchical baton directly to William.

My friend served with him in he Royal Navy where he was known as "Wing Nut.'

No, he wont pass the baton, he is too much of a self centred, little creep to do that.

It has been made clear by tradition that the next Monarch to rule in Britain will be Charles. Only if Charles decided do what his uncle Bertie did and abdicate will William succeed to the throne. Order of Succession to the British Throne - Who will be next?

When George Vl died in 1952 I was two months away from demobilisation from the Army after serving for two years on National Service. The first obvious sign that the King had died was the appearnce of 3 inch wide black armbands on the left arms of the commissioned officers. Unfortunately, the solemnity of the occassion wasn't reflected in their tempers or in their compassion for lesser service personnel. Mrs Esca and I got married in June of the following year, 1953, when much of the mourning for George Vl had been put on hold by the Coronation. We watched the Coronation on a black and white 9 inch television at one of Mrs Esca's friends. The 425 line set plus the 9 inch screen gave Mrs Esca a migrane. The whole of the celebration was tranmitted and it took most of the day. When we travelled to London after our wedding on the way to Folkestone our train was delayed and as a consequence our hotel room at the Strand Palace Hotel had been re-let. They did find us a single room with a threequarter bed on the top floor of the building. What with a hot night (the weather was very warm ), a small bed and a sucession of emergency vehicle bells through the night (the present sirens only came in later) it was not the best of wedding nights. Ahhh Happy Days!

Youve been married for two years longer than I've been alive, Esca.
That fact alone is grounds for enormous congratulation, notwithstanding the matter of the above excellent post.

As for the constitutional position regarding Charles's succession, I dont think he would have much trouble pleading insanity as grounds for instant abdication.
I mean...would you have chosen Camilla over Diana?
