Default The Million Pound Fiasco

The million-pound monstrosity: Struggling council ignores austerity drive to splash out on town centre sculpture (but what is it even supposed to be?)

So it goes on, as I mentioned in another post public officials who have control of public monies seem to lose any sense or constraint.
The next time I hear a government or local politician claiming job losses or service cuts because of lack of resources, well I will simple not believe them.
The council involved has justified job losses by the need to save money, yes so they could waste it. I wonder will any one resign or be sacked, excuse me while I stop laughing, probably already working out how to spend their bonus, or in the unlikely event of someone being fired, a golden goodbye.
A local councillor said he realised most people did not want it, then why was it allowed to get this far.
The people involved must have been incompetent to allow costs to spiral.
Steve Charmley, the council’s cabinet member responsible for Quantum Leap is said to be disappointed by the audit report, I bet he is now, the public know the facts.

I must say that I like the Quantum Leap a lot more than I like the Darwin Gate Sculpture in the centre of Shrewsbury, which just looks plain wrong plonked in the middle of such a beautiful medieval market town.

Maybe I should have remembered we have some metal 'trees' in my old town, they cut down real trees when the redeveloped the town centre. And it is supposed to be a Garden City.

:The council involved has justified job losses by the need to save money,:

the truth behind much of this is they made jobs which were not needed in the first place. When I lived in London my local council were creating jobs just to use up the yearly allowance, if they had not they would have had less money next year. The fact is, they should have used the money in the community instead, but we have people who can not run a bath without causing flood.
TRUE STORY:
my ex mother in law was disabled and she was expecting a visit from a lady from the council to see if they could do any more for her.....she already had all the benefits and knew the system.....anyway, the lady comes round, she was a blind Somalian lady and had with her an aide and intrepeteur. The outcome of the meeting was: NOTHING was heard from them again as my mother in law already had everything she needed...she did tell them that before, but they just wanted to check!!!!!
you and I paid for that out of our taxes folks!!!!

There is some truth in what you say sitcharlie, I used to work for a company that did a lot of government work, and near the end of the financial year the client would spend money as fast as they could, and I was told it was a case of spend it or lose it, seems nothing has changed.
Never mind it is only taxpayers money.

More street lights have been turned off at midnight around here, some places are as black as a coal miners face after he's been down pit. so the austerity drive around here has gone up another notch.

BTW: Modern Art is rubbish.

I drive past this sculpture in Shrewsbury a few times a week and the more I see it the more I think what a waste of money, as monolith says we have councils turning of street lighting to save money but what is the point if that saving is so they can waste the money somewhere else.....
