Default Nuclear Bunker to be sealed

BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Honecker's nuclear bunker opens

Things like this really interest me. It is a shame they are only going to open it for 3 months and then seal it up. Assuming of course they do fully seal it up!

I feel the same. It does seem strange that they want to completely seal it up though, seems a waste!

You'd think it would be a good tourist attraction. I found out not long ago that my uncle used to service a nuclear bunker in the UK. He couldn't tell us as it was an active bunker until recently and he had to sign the official secrets act, etc. It has now been decommissioned and he can talk about it.

It is a shame that many of the artifacts of the Cold War and, for that matter, WW2 are being disposed of. I agree they could be great tourist attractions. In Jersey they have the Underground Hospital and the Stawberry Farm bunker built during the German occupation which do a fantastic business.

It all is history and shouldn't be forgotten.

There's some kind of bunker in Wiltshire that was being sold off- I'll see if I can find a link.

Imagine the quiet!

The search got weird- here's a place I didn't know about!

BBC - Wiltshire - Wiltshire's Underground City - Wiltshire's Secret Underground City

Interesting stuff, and a good reminder of the now seemingly strange Cold War relationships on our own doorsteps.

Sealing it up is a shame if you look at it with purely historical eyes. Perhaps Berlin already has more than it's fair share of historical underground sites, or nobody would bankroll opening it to the public long term?

Great link Jexer - interesting stuff.

Your are right Jamie - someone has to fund these places initially and on going and it just might not be a viable option.
