£221,726 spent on Playstations

I'm not normally a Mail on Sunday reader but we picked it up with the papers today.

I can't believe this story

Pampered prisoners supplied with £221,726 of PlayStations | Mail Online

£221,726 of tax payers money is spent on games consoles for prisoners. So that is people who have broken the law and are being punished. What is the punishment exactly? Where is the deterrent?

One of the comments on the Mail site says this:

Maybe that is how it should be..

You have to hope they are at least paying for their own copies of GTA

It would surely have been more PC to get a University involved, hand out Nintendo DS' and copies of Brain Training and call it an experiment? Now that could be a Daily Mail campaign!

What is their punishment?
It would be punishment to me...endless hours of watching cartoon figures juming over ravines or millions of miles of racetrack coming at me for hours.
I heard yesterday that thre are so many overcrowded prisons now that rehabilitation programmes are being axed (I know it doesn't sound logical but ...) and yt a friend is a dressmaker and gives classes at a women's prison near here and they are begging her to do more hours. I wonder what percent of R&R is spent on playstations?
