Default How do you want your Beer served - Pints or Litres?

This is a local news article on the BBC site which tells of the Trading Standards people in Doncaster telling this Restaurant owner he can't serve beer in litres. According to the 1988 Weights & Measures Act draught beer has to be served in certified pint glasses. This guy's restaurant has a Polish theme and he is serving his beer in litres. For those who have a problem with Metric volumes: one Litre = 1.75 Imperial Pints. Are the Trading Standards being picky over this or are they right in insisting he change all his glasses to pint ones?

BBC NEWS | England | South Yorkshire | Anger over ban on beer in litres

Usually, the argument goes in the opposite direction where Metric is being foisted on us and people want to remain with Imperial weights and volumes. Personally, I don't mind. I buy my canned beer in either 440ml or 500ml cans, similarly with bottled beers. Why there should be one standard for canned and bottled beers being Metric and draught beers being measued in Imperial I don't know. If the price remains the same I would go for the litre - but then I'm Yorkshire born.

How about this...server two glasses...one a pint and one a .75 of a pint.
Or alternatively, advertise the beer as a percentage of a litre.
Awkward but you could make a big thing of it and ridicule the authorities.

Don't you get a teensy bit fed up with authority asssuming that everyone is crooked? I detest top-down nannying anyway but when it is as blunt an instrument as this, I woud get the press to cover the storybig time...lots of publicity for the restaurant and it makes the TS people look silly.

I'm not too concerned by the units of measure. However as somebody educated with the metric system the whole reluctance of the UK to adopt it whole heartedly is bemusing Let's not fully back one system, but half support two systems and then let everyone moan about the one they don't like, or understand, or weren't taught at school, or think the French invented etc etc

Now then, mine's a cold one (regardless of size) please

I don't find the resistance to the Metric Sytem bemusing. The Imperial Weights and Measures which we used to learn at school were not as precise as Metric but were just part and parcel of the British way of life. They were traditional and shouldn't be kicked to one side because working in 10's and 100's etc is easier. (Bring back pennyweights and grains ) Having said that I worked for over 40 years in Laboratories where Metric was the day to day system we used so metric volume and weights gave me no concern when they were introduced - I had been using them for years. The only Laboratory which used anything different to Metric was the Gas Board. They used to work in "Grains per 100 cu ft of Gas" and "BThU's" etc, all very Victorian.

Oh, and I'll join you in a pint, or 573 ml of great British Bitter, Pedigree from choice.

I don't do beer. I'm a wine drinker!

Do measures really matter?
