I do the same when typing. I use the middle finger of my right hand and the middle finger of my left hand together with my thumbs for the space bar. I only correct after I have finished typing to check my spelling and adjust. The screen might just as well not exist when I am actually typing and is only used for final checking and correcting. I am self taught on the keyboard like you but I find I can get a reasonable speed going once I concentrate.
Spelling is a different matter as is the use of punctuation. I am told that typing schools no longer teach punctuation as part of the courses and discourage the use of commas, semi-colons and other punctuation marks. They have even stopped splitting text up into paragraphs they tell me. Bloody lax that's what it is!
