Decline of traditional Christian names
I guess we've all noticed the fall in the number of Brians, Karens, Roberts and Susans but is this just fashion or like Delphine and Theobold are they gone for good?
End of an era for Edna, Norman and Irene - This Britain, UK - The Independent
Also how long do you think that fashion for mis-spelling names like Alys and Jayde will last?
God knows anybody spelling my first name incorrectly get a hairdrying that make Fergie's look like a kindergaten storybook reading.

My late mother was called Edith Annie and my paternal Grandmother was called Gertrude, usually called Gertie, her sister, my aunt, was called Harriet, usually Hettie, and my father was an Edmond. I remember the "oldies" talking about "Our Archie", who was an Archibald (poor sod) and there was also a Marmaduke in the family at one point, sounds like a cat these days. My maternal Grandmother was called "Sissie" by my Grandfather but I never found out what her proper name was, she died when I was about seven.
These days you hear of parents calling their children by all the names of the local football team. God help the teachers when they come to enter the names in the Register (do they have them these days?) We gave our kids two christian names each so they could choose which one to use - assuming they liked one or the other of them!

Thanks Sooty. Just think, it is eons since my maternal Grandmother died and I've only just found out what her "real" name was. you don't get many Ester's knocking about these days either. The only Esters I ever had anything to do with were Organic ones.

My maternal grandmother was Hilda Constance Margeurite (Sp?).
Everyone called her Madge or Kate!
I tend to detest the stupid names given to kids these days when they are based upon this pathetic following of so called celebreties and soaps.

I'm not keen on on some of the new names our celebs use and then the hoardes that following their lives.
As to the rest I've not really noticed I know a very young Olive, for example.

When I saw this list I wondered whether you had nine kids or whether you had less and some of your kids had two names. The thread on "How Old are You" settled that question. How do you manage to find names for all those children? We had enough difficulty finding names we agreed on for our three.

When my second daughter was born I wanted to call her Laura but the partner vetoed that idea and my mum suggested Catherine so that's what we called her. I then suggested Mary as a second name as that was Mum's middle name and the partner said what about his mum I told him to forget it as his mum is called Muriel Phyllis so Catherine only has the one name.
The other three are Abigail Elizabeth, Maurice Alexander and Matthew Frederick.
