Default Is Britain a Dirty Island?

It seems Bill Bryson has decided that this sceptred isle is going to seed and needs a bit of a tidy up. So much so that that he made a show for BBC Panorama and is President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

Since watching the show I have been spotting more and more litter as I meander about the place. At first I though he was OTT, but now I'm begining to think he might be right. The thing I noticed the most in the last week has been cigarette ends thrown from car windows. Presumably the responsible can't use the ashtray in their car, it would smell or devalue it somehow

Do you think the UK is dirty (I mean litter people )?

Yes I'm afraid it is. It has been getting worse for decades.

Ask yourself the question. When was the last time you saw somebody pick someone else's litter up and put it in the bin? Of course we have so many take away food outlets now each supplying about 5 separate item which may become litter the world has changed considerably. Gone are the days when it was considered rude to eat in public

Cant speak for England, but i know scotland is pretty clean, up here anyway. although wind factor is the reason. Gets so windy up here rubbish does not stay around, but looking at some programmes i see of the likes of london, manchester birmingham i would have to answer yes.

There are plenty of Mc.burger boxes and other detritus’ getting thrown out of car windows nightly in and around the countryside where I live. It can’t be that hard to take this packaging home and chuck it in the bin.
If that’s not bad enough there are some lazy sods about that drop their food packaging, including aluminium drinks tins, plastic bottles and the like, out in the wilds of the Yorkshire Dales where we go for our holidays.
Suffice to say we collect up what we can carry having flattened any tins and P/bottles and bin it at the nearest farm we pass.
Farmers would rather you did this than leave it for the sheep find it.
Better that than a dead ewe.

This country is getting more dirty. I think there are a lot of people who just don't give a damn. A lot of other countries such as Canada and parts of Europe are much cleaner than this country.

I have never dropped litter but that is due to the way that I have been brought up. I think the zero tolerance approach to litter is a good idea.

I do my bit as well by clearing up bits of metal in the fields!

It is a dirty island and there is a mindset that says it's okay.

I'm embarressed to show foreign friends around.

Re fag ends, that somehow does not seem to count as litter to those who smoke, I picked up around sixty of them a couple of weeks ago.

They were at the exit of the place where I work.

There had been a wedding at the place the day before, and despite the fact there was a place to put the fag ends, the lovely individuals ignored the fact.

As for chewing gum in town centres!

It's disappointing to hear most say the UK is dirty. I admit the show was an eye opener for me, hence the question. I think once you look for it you can't help but see it.

Your right about fag ends Jezer, they don't seem to count somehow. If smokers/drinkers/eaters/etc derive so much joy from a product then why can't they take a few moments to dispose of the remnants?

As for chewing gum, surely a recovery tax on the price of the product could be justified?
