Perhaps we understand the word "chastise" differently. And I do refute that I ever mentioned "not having a drink" in any circumstances I have discussed. And I do agree that physical punishment is to be avoided in favor of persuasion, contracts, convincing them of their own volition to recognise their place in society AT AN EARLY AGE.
Just one question to consider...or not, as you wish. If you never give prisoners SOME benefits such as TV's and pool tables, how re you goingt o punish them inside prison if they misbehave? And if you have nothing to reward them with, how are you going to reinforce good behaviour?
My points about chldhood were not targeted at abssent parents but at those who offer no guidance or systematic concern or where bigger brothers and sisters are more role models than the parents. If you are an absent middle-class parent, your children are less likely to be influenced by troubled kids on their doorstep...less influenced by the kids in the schools they go to. Less likely to see rubbish and the defacement of public property as normal. Less likely to steal for what they want.
I too will leave it at that but thank you for an interesting discussion.
