Default Learning to drive?

So if you drive, how long did it take you? Did you find it easy to learn or did you really hate it? I found it stressful to be honest.

It took me 11 months to pass my test, but it was worth it because I passed first time

If you are learning to drive at the moment, how you finding it?

My first instructor was a bas***d and my lessons were a waste of time- should have told my parents that we didn't get on.

He told my parents that I was a hopeless case.

Once I was with someone else all went fine and I passed first time back in 1975.

Before I went to live in the US this useless case was an instructor with the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

I hated learning to drive, but if i was ever going to break free from the peaceful village i lived in i needed a car. I passed 2nd time (don't they same second time around makes for a better driver? ) I remember my lessons costing £8 per hour, and filling up my first tank of petrol cost £7.50!!!! Oh how times have changed....

I passed my bike test and passed first time.

For my car test my employer at the time provided the lessons and test. I passed that first round too. Not bad considering I did it in a 3 ton lorry (just below the HGV limit) that had a crash gearbox, ie; you had to double-declutch to change gear.

It's soooooo long ago that I can't really remember! I do recall that my father told me that if I didn't start lessons by the end of a particular year, he wouldn't be paying for them.....that galvanised me into starting.

I was away at college at the time and my first test was scheduled at the beginning of December, but there was about six inches of snow that day and the test centre was over the hills and far away!....so that one was cancelled. I took it on the 27th December, in a snow shower, and passed first time. Have no idea how much the lessons were, suffice it to say it was pre-decimal times!

I took forever to learn to drive. I failed my first test badly after 6 months of lessons. Early on the examiner told me to turn left at the lights, and I turned right. It was at that point I knew I had failed and things went from bad to worse. I reversed round the corner and ended up hitting the opposite kerb. I lost all confidence and refused to have any more lessons. However, my mum took me out every weekend and made me practise. (Having sat with my son and daughter when they were learning, I don't know how she did it!) Anyhoo, unknown to me, she put in for another test for me, and told me when the date came through. I had 6 lessons with a different instructor (2 a week) before I took the test, and passed at the beginning of December. All in all, it took me 14 months to pass.

Yep- well done Kits.

I wonder if people pass first time, or with little apparent effort, it can make them over confident?

People who find it more challenging might take more care once they have passed?

When I moved to Texas, and indeed when anyone moves to a new State in the US they have to take the State driving examn within thirty days of residence in order to get a State driving licence, which doubles as photo ID and is invaluable.

This consists of a written exam, mainly multiple choice, and a pretty simple driving test.

It was quite amusing because Mrs Jezer turned it into a competition between the two of us- we sat it on the same day.

Who won?

I am not sure if passing first time makes people over confident or not. Daughter passed first time and (touch wood) she is a very careful driver. Son took 2 attempts, and he also is a very careful driver. OH passed first time with very few lessons and he scares me half to death. (Ooooh that could go in the Battle of the Sexes thread! )
