My first thought was that the car had to have an automatic gearbox.

It's a Chelsea Tractor probably in low range, and diff locked. They are tuned to start in gear so I guess it wasn't in Neutral when he turned the ignition key. I did some tests for a Court case in the US on a Land Rover once which had broken a chaps leg doing the same thing.

The gearbox is the same type as in the Toyota Land Cruiser which Top Gear couldn't destroy.

BTW that's the gear set up if you want your Range Rover to burn off a standard 911 in a standing quarter.
