Default Poor Road Surfaces

BBC NEWS | UK | Poor roads 'increasing punctures'

This interested me as I have been starting to notice that many roads I use have awful road services.

Can you change a tyre?

This used to be one of the tests when I was in my Uni motoring club.

Drive forward over a line, get out, jack the car and remove a wheel, roll the wheel around the car, replace the wheel, jack the car down, get back in and reverse back over the line.

I think my best time was 1 min 36 secs but I remember the winning time was 1 min 18 secs.

Of course all the wheel nuts were done up tight before the start.. I'm sure they were

Yep the yearbook's in the bookcase behind me with the times.

Interestingly I did hear on the radio a year or so a go that Councils would rather pay out compensation to drivers for the damage to vehicles than pay to fix the roads. It's cheaper.

That'll be the beancounters again!

I only ever had a puncture twice...once I was being followed by a friend who changed the wheel for me. The other time was on holiday in Eire and a passing motorist stopped and changed the wheel for me. In theory I could change a wheel but in practice I know I couldn't.

I remember having to change a wheel on a certain orange 1100 many years ago. It was in the middle of the country and pitch black. There was no torch and the car lights didn't help. I found the jack and the rest of the equipment and replaced the wheel. I did this all by feel. I think Sooty might remember that one because we were a bit late!

The roads are getting worse. I think my choice of vehicle is more suitable for the poor road conditions than most are. A lot of roads are like an off-road course now.
