Default Infuriating Players.

What got me onto this was the way David James can be playing brilliantly, and then for a split second just lose the plot.

Back in the 1970s Leeds United were one of the most successful teams in England and Europe. Their goalkeeper, Gary Sprake, was similar- brilliant most of the time and then lets one in that your granny could stop. It's tough being a goalie.

As for Roy McFarland against Poland!

So, what howlers come to mind for you?

This can be in any sport by the way.

Ray Clemence against Scothand at Wembley I forget the year but it was in the old Home Internaionals. Cluless first half let in a soft goal between his legs (nutmegged). Outstanding second half. Gerry Francis was England captain

I've looked it up it was 1976

Remember Peter (The Cat) Bonetti, the Chelsea goalie and the quarter final of the World Cup against Germany in 1970!

I suppose the Kop need reminding about Alan Hansen playing for Scotland!

Or that Southern African goalkeeper they had- began with G?

Ah, Bruce Grobbelaar, (spelling?) actually although he made some right bloomers too, I'd argue he wasn't as good a keeper as Gary Sprake. I guess Sprakey was the perfect Leeds Utd goalie, if you do something wrong, do it spectacularly wrong
Maybe that's one of the reasons I support them, it's never dull!

Changing the sport, is anyone of a certain age to remember the long distance runner Dave Bedford?

He'd set world records in races that didn't matter and every time there was a major competition he'd flunk it.
