Default The Olympic Games 2008

With the opening ceremony just hours away I thought we could have a dedicated Olympic Games thread to discuss how (well?) we are doing!

I've also started an Olympic Group so feel free to use either/or/none/both/etc.

Link for the group is: http://www.generalchat.co.uk/group.php?groupid=5

I was dissapointed by the BBC.

Ok the opening ceremony is often long and drawn out but I do think it kicks of the whole event in a special way especially when the participants troop in behind their national flag.

Trouble is I'm at work this afternoon so I can't see it live so scaning the Radio Times for the repeat I find that the only thing available is a 1 hour highlight show which also contains the usual 'three twonks and a table' discussion about medal prospects, sights around the city, and a plethora of BBC advertising (sorry placement).

Come on BBC it's only once every 4 years Eastenders will keep.

Come on Sooty. The BBC have got four hours of the opening ceremony from 12;45 to 16:45 and another hour from 19:00 to 20:00 tonight. How much more do you want? OK, so you are working; have you thought of using the BBCi Player to see the Opening Ceremony when you are at home. I'll be very surprised if they don't put it on there. Alternatively, can you record it on a TV Recorder? Over the next three weeks we will be inundated with Olympic games and presenters going on, and on, and on about certain things which have gone right, or wrong, with still more blasted replays ad nauseum. There are those of us who are not all that interested in the Beijing Olympics. I for one don't see why BBC2 can't be used for showing those who are interested all the games they could hope to see.

Sorry don't do iPlayer (I don't like DRM and won't support companies which install it on my PC by stealth). It's also P2P so I wonder if users will be getting warning letters.

I wouldn't mind watching it on BBC1 2 3 or 4 Christ just look at the rubbish on BBC3, sorry repeated rubbish, and even I, as a Whovian, am getting slightly bored with the endless Doctor Who repeats on BBC 4. But nothing probably because they can't cut to the ad breaks (again sorry BBC placement).

Still I digress. The whole point of the BBC paying that much for the transmission rights is that it hopes it will boost its market share. It is hardly likely to do that if it insists on transmitting the programme at a time most people will be unable to view it without repeating it.

Think I'll try and avoid it as much as possible. I'm not a fan of the Olympics.

Isn't the time it is on dictated by the TimeZone?

Why can't you use iPlayer streaming which doesn't store anything by stealth on your PC?

Id I'd read this earlier I'd have recorded it and uploaded it for you. Come to think of it my Toppy buffers for rewinding live so I'll put in on record now....

... I think I've got from 13.20 (only started at 1) so when it is done I'll copy it across and email you a link! Then you can watch it at your leisure!

It is now 14:38 and the countries are marching in preceded by their flags. The display prior to the march in was absolutely fantastic with some effects which took my breath. The "smoke" rings making up the five ring Olympic logo and the floating globe were as good as many magicians displays I have watched on the normal sized stage. They say Beijing is the City of Fireworks and the displays so far have been truly extraordinary. I really hope Sooty manages to see the bits he is missing this evening.

Brazil had a good sized group and i couldn't believe my ears when it was announced that the flag was being carried by Ronald Shite. I kid you not that is the name of the poor sod who got the flag waving job.

Right - back to the rest of the display.
