Default BBC iPlayer Download Manager

Has anyone else had a look at this latest offering from the BBC? I downloaded the BBC iPlayer software the other day and it is great for looking at programmes on all the BBC listings from BBC 1 & 2 to BBC 3 & 4. You can either download the programme or you can stream it. Programmes are available for 7 days after their initial showing.

I wanted to see the Panorama programme about childrens safety on the internet while my OH wanted to watch something else. Not having a digital recorder I streamed the programme this morning. The picture is available full screen and there is no cost involved.

Just have a look here Jezer. It gives all the details and it is only a small programme for the Manager. Downloading the programmes is a different kettle of fish but streaming them is just like playing back a recording from the Video Recorder.

There is also a site called tvcatchup that you register on and can view loads of programmes from all the free to view channels, it's free and all legal. You have to have a valid tv licence thats all.

And therein lies the rub. You register your IP address a quick cross check with the TV licence database and wham that address is not licensed sir!

I wonder how long it will be before the BBC want a TV license for every laptop, iPhone etc.

Also I understand a number of ISP are worried about the bandwidth this will take up and are starting to throttle the streaming

ISPs to BBC: We will throttle iPlayer unless you pay up

I suspect this won't last long in its current form

Thanks for the tip-off. I've just been on the site, and it's fantastic. What a great service from the BBC.

I can understand the ISP's complaining about dowloads because a typical BBC one hour programme is about 900MB and takes a couple of hours to download at a 1.5 Mbps broadband speed. However, streaming the programme is instantaneous, more or less, and it doesn't seem to me to be taking up the same amount of bandwidth as the download would. I may be wrong about this but I haven't tried to download any programmes purely because of the time it takes. After all, once the 7 day period is up you lose the downloaded programme in any event. Streaming I could understand but downloading where you lose your download after 7 days seems to me to be a bit daft. The other thing is that the programmes can't be dowloaded permanently because they are security closed.
