Default Chicken Out!

Has anybody seen Hugh Fearnly Whotisnames programmes on Channel 4?

Basically he's trying to make 50% of chicken sales in Axminster free range but he's up against Tesco's 2 chickens for £5.

While I support him in his cause (I always look for hock bones when buying chicken) I just can't see how he can win. I remember when Mad Cow was at its height and nobody was buying beef because of the health risk. Suddenly the supermarkets halved the price and steak flew off the shelves. This is Bargain Basement Britain....... Cost always wins.

I always get the free range and organic chicken and we're fortunate that we can afford to do so.

I've vowed never to eat a KFC again, which I quite liked.

Our chickens are pecking away happily in the back garden.

I watched it all. I thought it was quite a good program but don't believe at all that they managed to achieve 60% that week. It was well worded though as it was only whole chickens they did it on.

What really shocks me is how ignorant some of the people on it were.

We always get free range at least and, if in stock, organic. That's what happens when you grow up with animals!!

I was slightly amazed at the concept of a microwavable frozen omelette!

But the only thing that surprised me was the 17 bird per square metre.

I didn't see the programme unfortunately. I'm sure that he will run a clean ship but we've got one of those abominations of a deep litter farm down the road from us. I'm not into Animal Rights at all but that is one place I'd happily put a torch too. They are disgusting.
Quite the worst aspect is that the chickens have to be debeaked. Did Hugh F-W mention that?

I was waiting for a thread on this!! As you know, I live on a Chicken farm-the 17 birds per square metre is alot of old tosh....also, the way they showed the chickens being culled-is also alot of old tosh.

The Security on our farm has been brought up to higher than the maximum, thus I feel like I am living in COLDITZ/ALCATRAZ as due to this run of 'Chicken Out' programmes, the Animal Rights Activists are starting to come out!!

My next fear relating to this matter is Jamies Olivers programme due out on Friday evening!!

Well, I have been and checked the bird ratio in our 'chicken sheds' and our birds' are kept in areas equalling 1.1 birds per square foot....do your maths and see what you come up with-it certainly wont be 17 birds' per square meter!!
