The Great Antiques Roadshow Rip-Off
Heralded as the first ever £1,000,000 Antiques roadshow valuation in the press over the weekend, which apparently needed five people to carry it. I watched the programme wondering what it would be. Perhaps a lost Sheraton wardrobe or a newly discovered Stubbs masterpiece. Could it be rare Wedgewood dinner service or a haul of Georgian silver.
In fact it was none of these things. It was a miniature bronze statue of the Angel of the North. Not newly discovered. not especially appealing and at only 11 years old certainly not an antique (Since I have flower pots older than that I wonder if I should get them valued).
What a swizz. I suppose the next time they want to boost the ratings they'll do a show in London drop into the Tate and do a quick valuation of Bacon's 'Triptych' in a blaze of publicity even though everybody knows it's there and must be knocking on £50,000,000s worth.
I say again what a swizz
