Default American Madness.

Now we all know the dangers of gun crime, and luckily for us in the uk we know its not sensible to carry a gun. Now in America most of us are aware that many school children end up taking firearms and offensive weapons to school, hense the amount of security that goes on to prevent the likes of the Columbine disaster and the rest of the massacres that have happened, so who the hell came up with this bright idea. How long before it goes wrong.

I just love the American logic behind this suggestion. Just wait until Jezer sees this - I can't wait for his comments.

Now if the suggestion was to let teachers carry a tazer it might look different. That way they get the chance to not only disable the intruder, or armed student, but they could use it to keep order in the classroom.

Teachers carried 'weaponry' when I was at school. They included slippers, canes and low flying board rubbers!

I agree with your thinking Medussa in that gun ownership is not desirable, but the reality is that guns are far more readily accessable in the US and even more so Texas.

So what do you do?

You could have the situation in a school where the authorities are not allowed to carry a gun.

And so if a pupil decides to bring his mom or dad's handgun which is kept in the third drawer down in their bedroom, in case someone decides to burglarise the house, they are pretty much powerless, and has been the case in a number of school shootings they are having to wait for the police to arrive.

That could take some time, especially in some rural areas, and the police will not necessarily know the layout of the school.

If you give the teachers the option of taking a firearm in, it introduces an element of doubt into anyone's mind.

You think I'm kidding?

Why is there a disproportionally low level of road rage in Houston? People rarely honk theirhorn at each other for example.

Cos they might be carrying a gun.

I'm not saying it's right, but it's how it is.

After Dunblane handguns were banned from the UK, in the misguided belief that miscreants would not have access to them.

The result is that our genuine target shooting competitors have to train abroad.

And has it curtailed gun crime?

So, my point is this is not a perfect world, and people have to deal with an imperfect situation.

And for the record, I would allow teachers to have the option to carry a weapon.

Sorry Disco- a board rubber wouldn't stack up.

i suppose you would understand this better than me. I unfortunately have never been to the us, and like most brits, or should i being stuck in a fishing village in scotland, i dont have to live with the terror of being shot.
We only have to worry about knives.
I just think that maybe a teacher will take a threat the wrong way and shoot a student, his life would be over as quick as that.

Never meant to get your goat up jezer. SORRY.

Medussa- you are not getting my goat up- please don't worry about that.

My point about carrying a gun is that you are not looking to use it- it's the deterrent factor.

You may not have been to the US, but you live relatively close to Dunblane.

I lived eight miles from Hungerford, where my mum and friends of mine got caught up in the shootings. Michael Ryan's first victim was in Savernake Forest BTW.

I felt safe in the US- I spent some time in NY where my wife worked, LA where I worked and Houston where we lived.

We did not go to the dodgy parts of these cities though I have had my moments.

Point is, crap can happen anywhere, it's a case of preparing for what is likely to occur.

Well i am glad that i aint rubbed you up the wrong way. The dunblane massacre was horendous as was the hungerford shootings, i cant imagine what it must have been like being caught up in it. I as a parent feel that handing the teachers a gun works against what we should be teaching our kids about violence, but like you say to fight fire you need fire..

I actually didn't say that.

I said that you should enter an element of doubt, but when push comes to shove then unfortunately that is what is required.
