Default Mugabe makes Deal with MDC

I wonder why this bit of news doesn't fill me with confidence?
BBC NEWS | World | Africa | Zimbabwe rivals agree unity deal
I have great difficulty believing that Mugabe will agree to share power in any way which will meet the requirements of the MDC. I hope this will be the beginning of the end for the problems in Zimbabwe but Mbeki's brokering of the deal reminds me of another time when a British Prime Minister came back from Munich after doing a deal with Adolf Hitler.

You have to ask what the military have been offered since it is they who really run the country. Most likely immunity from prosecution and a right to stay in Zim or go as they wish. International banks should freeze all their assets IMO...was astonished that Barclay's bank is operating there...but I am naive I guess. There must be others...

Lets hope it is good. Mugabe will want a good way out so his pride isn't dented.

I hope you are wrong Esca but it wouldn't surprise me.

Having just watched the signing of the "deal" and the body language of the signatories I don't have much confidence in the future outcome. Mugabe in charge of the Army and Morgan Tsvangirai in charge of the Police sounds like a recipé for Civil War. Mugabe is still blaming Britain and the United States for the problems in Zimbabwe. No change there then. I suppose we'll just have to watch developments over the next couple of weeks.

Well Mugabe is supposedly in charge of rge army.

Time alone will tell how this will go.

If things look to improve I hope that the EU remove sanctions, and that those in real need get a better deal.

To be fair to the EU, I don't think the US has told them to get involved yet, have they?

He probably does have a food taster. Many people who act as Dictators have food tasters. I would wonder how often he has to get a new one.

Last nights news reported that Morgan Tsvangirai wasn't very happy with the arrangements. Then there was a report that Mugabe had nothing to fear.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7619683. Hmmmm - I wonder. I remember the Nazis telling the victims heading for the Gas Chambers exactly the same story.

It makes me wonder, when watching TVC news, that reporters say they are forbidden from reporting from inside Zimbabwe and then are standing in public in some street in that country. The spirit of Kate Adie rules OK!! (she is one of my heroes...)

It looks as if things are slowly developing. The decision on Power Sharing between the parties looks as if it has been laid down, however, Mugabe is looking upon this as a "humiliation" and his comments, if true, do not arbor well for this arrangement at all. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could spit - and these days that isn't very far.

BBC NEWS | World | Africa | Deal a humiliation, says Mugabe

Kate Adie deserves a medal for the way she has carried out her reporting over the years.
